YOUR EXPERIENCE, IN A CLEARER ORDER

Harvard Resume — Examples, Structure, and a Clear Starting Point

Understand what makes a Harvard-style resume useful and decide how to present your experience. A simple format gives relevant evidence room to stand out.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

A Harvard resume example, explained

“Harvard resume” usually describes a clear, evidence-led resume style. It does not imply that the applicant attended Harvard. The fictional examples below show what each section needs to communicate.

01

Student, experienced applicant, or career changer?

A student with limited employment can start with education and relevant projects. An experienced applicant will often make recent work the main evidence. A career changer can introduce the connection to the target role in a brief summary, then substantiate it with projects or transferable work. Keep the dates and original job titles accurate in every version. The layout serves your evidence; it should not force every candidate into identical sections.

02

A resume and an academic CV serve different needs

For many job applications, a resume is a selective account of relevant experience. An academic CV may need publications, teaching, grants, presentations, and a longer research history. International employers also use “CV” to mean a job-application resume. Read the application requirements before choosing a short Harvard-style layout. This builder is not a Harvard Medical School faculty CV system.

03

Turn responsibilities into specific contributions

Begin with the work you performed, add useful context, and include a result when you can support it. “Helped with onboarding” is vague. “Prepared onboarding instructions and answered setup questions for new support teammates” is more concrete if those were your tasks. If you know a verified time saving, add it; otherwise leave the result qualitative. A clear account of your own contribution is stronger than a borrowed achievement.

04

What makes the final version ready to send?

Check it against one target role rather than a generic idea of professionalism. Can the reader find your relevant work, education, and skills without searching? Remove repeated bullets, explain unfamiliar project names, and check links. Read the PDF after export to catch a heading stranded at the end of a page or a bullet split awkwardly. Ask someone unfamiliar with your background which role they think you are applying for.

Take the section structure and replace the placeholders with your own evidence.

01

A graduate with a substantial project

An applicant for a junior data role has a degree, a team capstone project, and part-time retail work.

STARTING POINT

Summary: Highly motivated graduate looking for an opportunity. Experience: Worked in a shop. Skills: Teamwork, analytics, leadership.

A MORE ACCURATE VERSION

EDUCATION BSc Mathematics — Northbridge University — 2022–2025 PROJECTS Transport data capstone — final-year team project • Cleaned missing and duplicate records in a public transport dataset using Python. • Prepared charts comparing peak and off-peak travel patterns and explained the limitations in the team presentation. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE Retail Assistant — 2023–2025 • Reconciled end-of-shift cash records and raised discrepancies with the supervisor.

Why this works. The project carries the strongest evidence for the target role, so it receives detail. The retail role still shows a relevant responsibility without pretending it was an analyst position. The applicant should identify their own tasks within the team project and use the real degree, employer, and dates. A generic summary is unnecessary when the evidence already establishes the direction.

02

An experienced professional with a promotion

An operations applicant held two positions at the same employer and wants the progression to be clear.

STARTING POINT

Cedar Logistics — Operations Manager — 2019–2025. Managed dispatch and trained employees.

A MORE ACCURATE VERSION

CEDAR LOGISTICS Operations Coordinator — 2022–2025 • Maintained the dispatch schedule and escalated delivery exceptions to the warehouse lead. • Prepared setup instructions for new dispatch teammates. Dispatch Assistant — 2019–2022 • Checked shipment records against carrier updates and corrected missing tracking references.

Why this works. The revised entry restores the actual titles and separates the dates. It shows progression without inventing a manager role. Put each role’s evidence beneath that role. If you have a documented improvement or scale measure, add it to the relevant bullet; do not apply a later achievement to the entire employment period.

03

A teacher moving into customer onboarding

The candidate has teaching experience and wants to show related skills without claiming software-industry employment.

STARTING POINT

Customer Success Manager with extensive onboarding experience.

A MORE ACCURATE VERSION

SUMMARY Teacher moving into customer onboarding, with experience explaining unfamiliar processes and preparing step-by-step learning materials. EXPERIENCE Teacher — actual employer and dates • Created step-by-step resource packs and adapted explanations after reviewing learner questions. • Coordinated progress updates with families and colleagues.

Why this works. The summary explains the transition. The employment section keeps the real role and provides transferable evidence. It does not claim customer-retention results, account ownership, or software training that never happened. Add a relevant independent project if you have completed one, clearly labelled as a project rather than employment.

TRY IT YOURSELF

Build your evidence bank before writing

No account needed. Use your current draft and the role you are applying for.

  1. List each role, course, project, and relevant activity with accurate dates. Keep this master record separate from a short application resume.
  2. For each item, answer: what did I do, who used the work, what did I produce, and what changed? Leave unknown results blank.
  3. Underline the examples that relate to the target role. Select those first instead of compressing every past activity onto one page.
  4. Choose section order based on that evidence. Keep job titles, institutions, and date ranges intact while changing emphasis.
  5. Ask a reader to identify your target role and strongest two examples. If their answer differs from your intention, revise the ordering or specificity.
01

Resume or CV: follow the application context

Employers use “CV” and “resume” differently across countries and sectors. For many job applications, both describe a concise account of relevant experience. For academic roles, a CV may instead require a much longer record of research, teaching, and publications.

Read the application requirements before deciding what to include. A structured employment resume is not a substitute for a specialist academic or institutional template when one is required.

02

Decide what the reader should remember

Choose the two or three strengths most relevant to the role, then find the evidence for them in your experience. Your summary should introduce those strengths; your work and project entries should substantiate them.

A broad claim such as “excellent problem solver” is less informative than a specific explanation of the problem you handled, your contribution, and the outcome. Let the evidence carry the description.

IN PRACTICE

Turn a broad strength into evidence

Illustrative evidence, not a suggested claim for every applicant. Include the activity only if you performed it.

STARTING POINT

Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Coordinated weekly handoffs between the support and implementation teams and documented open customer issues.

Before you move on

  • Check whether the employer wants a resume or specialist CV.
  • Choose evidence relevant to the application.
  • Make the summary consistent with the detailed entries.
  • Keep university affiliation claims accurate.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is Harvard CV Maker affiliated with or approved by Harvard University?

No. Harvard CV Maker is an independent service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, approved by, or sponsored by Harvard University. We built our own tools using publicly available resume and cover-letter guidance, including resources published by Harvard's career services. These resources inform our formatting rules and AI instructions.

What is a Harvard-style resume?

It is a straightforward resume style associated with publicly available Harvard career guidance: clear sections, concise descriptions, and specific evidence of your contribution. It is not a qualification, a university endorsement, or a guarantee of hiring success.

Can I use a Harvard resume if I did not attend Harvard?

Yes. You can use a clear resume structure regardless of where you studied. State your actual institutions and qualifications. Never use the university name, crest, or a sample credential to imply an affiliation you do not have.

What should I include with no professional experience?

Use relevant education, projects, volunteering, part-time work, and activities that demonstrate the required capabilities. Label each activity accurately and explain your own contribution. You do not need an empty work-history section or invented employment.

Does a Harvard resume need a summary?

A summary is optional. Include one when it clarifies relevant experience or a career change. Omit it if it only repeats information below or uses general claims without supporting evidence.

Where can I get a Harvard resume template?

Our template page includes a copyable independent outline and links to public Harvard career resources. You can also use our builder to create and edit a Harvard-format draft and export PDF. Our software is not an official Harvard product.
